Get Winded: Breaker, Beer & Power

A Wind Is Coming In!

1. Standing on deck out in the ocean air while volunteering with other bad-ass activists for The Sea Shepard Conservation Society could be more than a little breezy. Stopping the whaling and dolphin -killing industries are not easy unless you have some amazing wind breaker rain jacket made from 100% recycled poly, so get ready for wet & breezy. From Patagonia

DB’s Etiquette Recommendation: Like celebs? What do Mick Jagger, Orlando Bloom, Ed Norton, Uma Thurman, Maggie Q, Justin Long, Naomi Watts, Pierce Broznan, and Anthony Kiedis have in common? They are all huge Sea Shepherd supporters. Getting involved in activism is sophisticated, sexy and smart. Interested in joining the most active volunteer marine conservation organization in the world? There are many ways to volunteer for Sea Shepherd both at sea and on shore.

2. Brooklyn Brewery Williamsburg Brooklyn’s very own beer company is not only great purveyors of vegan beer, but they run on 100% wind power. Next time you are out for drinks, ask for the green beer.

3. Did you know that if you are a Con Edison Energy customer (residential or business) even if you rent – you can switch your energy to come from Wind Power? Con Ed Solutions.

I just switched over to Wind last week. WIND Power is only an additional 2.5 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Basically, if your bill was 750 KH last month, you’ll only be spending $15 more this month and doing a ton of good for the planet.

KEEP These In Mind

100% Cotton Canvas Hi-tops inspired by traditional, indigenous woven-art – technically these come in women’s sizes, so if you are a Men’s 10(US) and under, you’ll be fine with size conversion. Otherwise, for guy like me with size 12, these are not for you. I am showing a few of the styles that do not have wool products in them.

keep1keep2black

Dudes can be feminists. KEEP’s new hi-tops pay homage to age-old traditions and the handiwork of women everywhere. Stripes abound in woven Mayan fabric straight out of the highlands of Guatemala and hand quilted morning star pieces light the way on our latest Guerra offerings. Tip your hat to the labor of ladies around the world, sit back and get inspired. 100% cotton canvas. Molded rubber sole.

DBs Etiquette Recommendation: Many people believe that harvesting wool does not involve any cruelty. A few of the styles do utilize wool. For info on why not to support products made from wool, click here.

Don't Buy A Dog

Enzoenzito

Meet Enzo. He is my new 3-year-old child. The people that originally ‘owned’ him neglected, abused, and abandoned him, but he is doing really well after only a couple of months with me. I rescued him through www.sugarmuttsrescue.org. Enzo is one good reason NOT to buy a dog from a pet store or breeder. Every time we purchase a pet, be it fish, fowl, feline or French Bulldog, wonderful creatures like Enzo sit in a shelter, waiting to be put-down – or possibly worse yet, rot in a no-kill shelter for their whole lives without a family or proper care.

The demand for pure-bred designer puppies is so powerful that breeders and puppy-mills that force dogs to spend their entire lives in cages constantly breeding have become a serious problem. They continue to thrive because they prey on unwitting consumers who fall for cute puppies in pet store windows and on fancy websites. How can we ethically purchase a dog when so many need to be rescued? Did you know that there are almost 4 million dogs and cats put to sleep each year due to pet overpopulation?

“Life is particularly bad for “breeding stock,” dogs who live their entire lives in cages and are continually bred for years, without human companionship and with little hope of ever becoming part of a family. These dogs receive little or no veterinary care and never see a bed, a treat or a toy. After their fertility wanes, breeding animals are commonly killed, abandoned or sold to another mill. The annual result of all this breeding is hundreds of thousands of puppies, many with behavior and/or health problems. ”

These gorgeous gals in my lap were rescued by my friends Chloé Jo and Jeremy. As you can see, these pitbull mixes are totally vicious! Contrary to popular opinion, pitbulls and pitbull mixes can make amazing companions.

Avoid the temptation to “rescue” a puppy mill or pet-store puppy by buying him. Even though your intentions may be good, don’t buy a puppy with the idea that you are “rescuing” him or her. Your “rescue” opens up space for another poor puppy mill puppy and puts money into the pockets of the puppy mill. Pet stores won’t leave their cages empty and websites won’t leave their pages blank. The money you spend on your puppy goes right back to the puppy mill operator and ensures they can continue breeding and treating dogs inhumanely. If you see someone keeping puppies in poor conditions, alert your local animal control authorities instead of buying.

Organic & This Old Thing?

1. John Patrick Organic makes organic fashion that is practical, and wearable for any man.

John Patrick Organic
John Patrick Organic

DB Etiquette Recommendation: John Patrick Organic does use vegetable-tanned leather, cashmere, and organic wool in some products, which is much more than most designers can say- but something that, for those of us who know about ecology or animal advocacy, is not entirely sustainable or desirable. Aside from the ethical argument of domesticating animals, Think of the amount of resources it takes to raise a cow, or a sheep (feed grains, land space, water, energy, possible slaughter, transport etc…) as opposed to a hemp canvas or an organic bamboo (less land space, less water, transportation). Stick to the organic plant-based products.

For a list of where to purchase, click here.

2. THIS OLD THING? Tommy Cole and Roy Caires, fashion photographer and designer, magnificently re-purpose thrift garments into entirely new and gorgeous pieces. I own two of their vests and get asked who, what, and where constantly.red

DB Etiquette Recommendation: I’ve always said, thrift anything is more ethical than new anything. The only time to take heed is being aware of what you’re making look fabulous. While, ethically speaking, a recycled fur or leather bomber may have less impact on the environment and animals than a brand-new synthetic garment – be aware of what you are promoting. Chances are, if you make fur and leather look fabulous, people will continue to demand it, and seek it out – new or not. Please shop thrift and re-purposed – it’s the greenest, but steer clear of obvious leather, fur, and wool.

FOODSWINGS

foodswingslogo

If you are ever in Brooklyn drinking until 1:30 am, and you get that drunk-hunger, Foodswings – masters of indulgant vegan junk-food – are open until 2am on Friday and Saturday, 12am on weekdays (closed Monday). Thats right – drown your drunken sorrows in soy milkshakes, buffalo sauce, or gravey-drenched french-fries. Sometimes, there’s nothing better! Menu.

DB’s Etiquette Recommendation: It’s only ok to get grease on your shirt at the END of the night. Just make sure you share your fries and tip generously. Nothing is worse than a stingy drunk.

Soy Lattes & Cahsew Cheese in Williamsburg Brooklyn

I live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. One of my favorite things to do on a Brooklyn afternoon is to enjoy a soy-latte at Gimme! Coffee. Gimme! could be the best coffee in New York City. They have rave reviews, and I have yet to find something better. Their beans are fresh-ground and absolutely never bitter. Smooth, rich, and aromatic – the product is nearly perfect.

Soy Latte at Gimme! Coffee

After my soy-latte, if I am feeling especially indulgent – I head to Marlow & Son, the mostly-not-vegan-at-all gourmet mini-market/restaurant-cafe/wine-bar and pick up a wheel of Dr-Cow’s Aged Cashew Cheese to eat with a fresh baguette and a bottle of S.Pellegrino. Dr. Cow’ Cashew cheese tastes like any good, soft, French cheese. The only catch is that it’s hand-made in Williamsburg from cashews – not from cholesterol, pus & chemical laden cow’s milk. I am in love. Won’t you join me?

Vegan Bomber Jacket & Tope Wallets

1. Cheap Monday, whose jeans are as inexpensive as they are tight – have made a pretty incredible vegan pilot jacket. PVC-coated polyester with a removable faux-shearling fleece collar. The pilot/bomber is a classic jacket that has rib knit cuffs and hem; 2 snap pockets at the front; and a single pocket inside.

While this jacket is technically vegan, the dangers of PVC plastics are one reason to not partake. Alas, is PVC really cruelty-free if it ends up poisoning a bunch of living things? It is certainly better than the environmental devastation associated with leather production: clearing land, raising, feeding, watering and transporting the cattle, then slaughter and tanning using compounds like chromium.

As for labor, this is from Cheap Monday: (Read their entire code of conduct here. Code of Conduct)

We believe that it is important to take responsibility when it comes to working conditions, from both ethical and social aspects as well as issues regarding production and the environment.

Couldn’t they have made this in tope (see below) or waxed canvas? sigh…

“Tope is a synthetic fabric similar (in texture) to a vinyl canvas. However, Tope does not contain certain hazardous chemicals typically found in most vinyl-based products. In particular, Tope contains NO PVC, Tope is made from non-toxic raw materials (it causes no dioxin, heavy metal or phthalate pollution), Tope decomposes when buried, Tope is chlorine chemicals free and Tope is fabricated through a pollutant free process. Additionally, we have engineered a tremendously technical printing process whereby we print high resolution and full photographic images using environmentally friendly inks. To top it off, Tope is also vegan and animal free.”

Look at these beauties! Cruelty-Free, eco-conscious, and fair-trade. Oh yeah, and they look amazing.

NOHARM is fresh out of the UK. You can purchase any of their vegan shoes or boots at Amazon.com or Togged.com.

The Black Oxford, and Brown Ankle Boot, below, are my favorites – but most of the shoe and boot styles can easily compare to some of the top high-fashion designers. They are faux-leather and hand-crafted in Itay – and according to the website, “NOHARM is strongly opposed to child-labour and worker exploitation” so what are you waiting for, these are gorgeous!

These boots were created in the 40′s by the Foreign Legion. They are simple, machine-washable, and look great with a pair of jeans. Canvas is most commonly made from cotton, but it used to be made from hemp. The word canvas is derived from the Latin word for cannabishemp!

Dude Food: Field Roast Vegan Sausage

Field Roast Apple Sage Sausage could possibly be the answer to our prayers. This is the most savory, versatile, satisfying vegan sausage I’ve used. Go to Whole Foods or your nearest health-food store and pick up some of this ASAP.

While typical animal-based sausage pack  the cholesterol, saturated fats, and ground up animal flesh into sheep or pig’s intestinal casings -  field roast is made simply from grains, veggies, and fruits. While these sexy sausages might get you in the mood… to eat – they’ll also help keep your own sausage working. Find out why eating meat can make your sausage limp and how adopting a plant-based diet can improve your sex-life.

Here’s a simple and elegant recipe to try it out with – perfect for dinner with a date, your best bro, or a skeptical carnivore:

Sausage

Apple Sage Sausage with Roasted Peppers and Wine Sauce
(serves 2)

You’ll need:

  • 2 Field Roast Apple Sage Sausage links
  • 1-2 tbsp Earth Balance or other vegan oil.
  • medium onion
  • medium shallot (2 large cloves)
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 large green or red bell pepper
  • 2 handfuls of crimini mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup white wine
    1. Roughly slice or chop the mushroom, shallots, garlic, onion, and peppers
    2. Oil a pan with Canola or Earth Balance
    3. On low-medium heat, sautee the ‘shrooms, shallots, garlic, onion, and peppers for about 10-15 minutes until they begin to turn golden.
    4. Add the White Wine, let simmer for 3-5 minutes
    5. Slice the sausage in half, long-ways
    6. In separate pan, sautee Sausage in Earth Balance, turning until each side is crispy and golden (careful not to char!)
    7. Plate the sausage and smother with veggies and sauce.

To pimp it, try a chardonnay with this dish, and a simple arugula salad.
