1. Sample sales are almost like shopping thrift, right? It’s all the leftover stock that really has little impact on the supply and demand of most designers. Well, maybe that’s just my rationalization for allowing myself to go buy stuff at them. What do you think? Are sample sales still conspicuous consumption? If we consider the standards they set for how people should look (maintaining social hierarchies based on glitz & glam), in a lot of ways, they’re like ‘humane’ meat; there’s not enough to satisfy everyone, and they make those who can participate feel a little less guilty about engaging in an ultimately destructive social behavior. No Impact Man‘s wife, Michelle, recently experienced a hunger for retail therapy. Read the story here.

2. Papal Passover. The Papal visit makes me think of those clergymen who wear Yarmulkes. I’ve always wondered why thttp://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/04R1dQn9156Hn/340x.jpghey wear them if they’re not Jews? This leads me to thinking about Passover! If Passover is about the Jews being liberated from slavery, my four-questions are: How is tonight related to animal liberation? Do Jews have a duty to recognize slavery in all its forms and attempt to liberate the oppressed? Can something besides a hard-boiled egg, a bone, and honey be used on a Seder Plate considering their exploitative origins? What’s a vegan to do on passover? Sit and cry into a bowl of Matzoh meal? 3. Time Out’s 2008 Eat Out Awards puts Blossom at the top of their Reader’s Choice list.
(Other nominees: Candle 79, Counter)“There’s a reason feijoada—a Brazilian beef stew—contains meat: It’s a beef stew. So when a vegan place like Blossom offers a “lighter version,” made with smoky tempeh, black beans, chayote and sweet potatoes, you’re allowed to be skeptical. But those animal-friendly ingredients make the hearty dish taste that much better.Upscale while keeping its crunchy cred, the Chelsea restaurant does protein right: Try the satay (with seitan), the scaloppine (more seitan, with white-wine caper sauce) or the dancing curry (tofu and veggies, served with popcorny forbidden black rice). You can’t go wrong—but you already knew that.”

(A few years back, I was the first waiter ever to work at Blossom!)

5.Luxury Hotels and Resorts “Act to Save the Environment” with Eco-Friendly Hospitality.

According to the International Ecotourism Society, more than two-thirds of U.S. travelers consider “active protection of the environment, including support of local communities,” to be part of a hotel’s responsibility, while 70% would pay a premium to stay at a hotel with “a responsible environmental attitude.” Hyatt is taking action.

Three Earth Day Doozies

There’s many reasons that Earth Day brings out the worst in us. Here’s a list of things to keep in mind for next week when everyone thinks that things are just swell because they decided to recycle for one day.

1. The Problem is Not Improving

FACT: We are in the midst of an ‘extinction event’ known as the Holocene extinction event. A sizeable fraction of these extinctions are occurring in the rainforests. That means cattle grazing, and what we are growing to feed the cattle is a huge culprit. That means logging is huge culprit. That means we are in really big trouble. Scientists estimate that during the last century, up to two million species have become extinct – thats 140,000 species per year (based on Species-area theory). Overall, the Holocene extinction event is most significantly characterized by the presence of man-made driving factors and its very short geological timescale (tens to thousands of years) compared to most other extinction events.

FACT: The rate of resource consumption, land usage, deforestation, pollution,World power usage in terawatts (TW), 1965-2005. desertification, overfishing, energy consumption is not even slowing down – in fact it’s accelerating. The annual quantity of resources extracted from global ecosystems rose from 40 to 53 billion tons between 1980 and 2002 – an increase of one third within only 22 years. And scenarios of future developments show that consumption will continue to rise (up to an estimated 80 billion tons in the year 2020), if no political actions are taken to slow down this trend. (http://www.seri.at)

2. The Three Fat Elephants in the Living RoomOverpopulated World

FACT: Human overpopulation is one of the leading causes of environmental degradation. This is something people don’t want to talk about or address. Instead we say, “carry a canvas bag to the grocery store”, when we should be saying “Don’t reproduce – adopt.” My opinon on child-bearing is the same as my opinion on purchasing pets: why make more when there are so many that already need good homes?

FACT: We are approaching a point of a total food crisis. In addition to overpopulation, changes impacting Earth’s ability to function as a suitable habitat for human beings, such as global warming, desertification, overfishing, peak oil, soil degradation, deforestation, aquifer depletion and other environmental problems caused by industrialization, will significantly reduce food production or factors necessary for well-being. Meanwhile the wealthiest 20 percent of the world’s population consumes 80 percent of the goods and services produced from Earth’s resources.

FACT: Eating meat and dairy causes global warming. Just last year the United Nations did a report called ‘Livestock’s Long Shadow’ that revealed global livestock production is more responsible for global warming than the transportation sector. The findings of this report suggest that it should be a major policy focus when dealing with problems of land degradation, climate change and air pollution, water shortage and water pollution, and loss of biodiversity, yet we rarely see or hear anything about going veg to slow global warming.

3. Blatant Greenwashing

If you are sick of seeing companies that are notorious polluters and resource-gluttons trying to paint a green picture of themselves, join the club. See CorpWatch’s Greewashing Awards.

green*wash: (gr~en-wosh) -washers, -washing, -washed 1.) The phenomenon of socially and environmentally destructive corporations attempting to preserve and expand their markets by posing as friends of the environment and leaders in the struggle to eradicate poverty. 2) Environmental whitewash. 3) Any attempt to brainwash consumers or policy makers into believing polluting mega-corporations are the key to environmentally sound sustainable development

Contributer's Corny Conversation

This anecdote comes to us from Brooklyn-based, DB Contributer Michael Oman-Reagan:

The other day my boyfriend brought home a bag of Ike & Sam’s Kettlecorn with the hopes it would be a snack we could enjoy together (I’m vegan, he’s not). A quick glance at the ingredients didn’t turn up anything obviously cruelty-inducing; Popcorn, Corn Oil, Sugar, Salt. Of course, I wanted to make sure//www.taquitos.net/im/sn/IkeSam-Orig.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors. that it was made with vegan sugar, so I emailed Ike & Sam’s. I included a link to explain how sugar is sometimes produced using bone char. Sam, himself, replied “I didn’t even know people use bones for sugar and I have to tell you I will be looking into this. Thank you for bringing this to my attention, bones just do not sound appetizing to me either.” Yeah, right? Who needs bones in their popcorn…

So, he contacted the supplier, got the refinery information for me and confirmed that it is on a list of refineries that don’t use bone char. And during our email exchange, I also mentioned vegan wine and he asked “Just out of curiosity, how could wine not be vegan?” so I replied with an explanation about clarifying, eggs and fish guts, etc. He was genuinely interested to learn about how sugar, beer and wine might not be vegan.

The whole exchange really made me realize what an impact we can have as consumers when we take time to contact producers and ask questions. In this case I had a chance to teach a food producer something and he was really receptive, even thanking me “for the lesson.” What a good reminder about the power of personal contact and optimism. So, the next time I wonder about a product – I’m going to give them a call. Maybe I’ll learn something and be able to teach them something too.

Faygala's Noodle Kugel

It’s not bupkes, it’s vegan!

Kugel is a traditional Yiddish pudding. About 800 years ago, cooks in Germany started using noodles instead of bread for this ancient delight. Then in the 17th century, sugar was introduced and the option of making sweet kugel became popular. I have the chutzpah to take this sweet Hungarian and Polish rendition of Kugel, incorporating raisins, cinnamon, and creams, one step further when I tsunemen the eggs and farbaytn the cows milk products with nut and soy based creams. Who wants to eat chicken periods and pus anyway? Your mamele will kvel.

What you’ll need:
1, 8oz bag of wide noodles (eggless)
1/2 cup Earth Balance
8 oz tofu cream cheese
1/2 block of silken tofu (make sure it’s silken!!)
1/4 cup raw cashew butter
1 cup of vegan sour cream ( I prefer Tofutti)
1 cup of organic raisins (any color)
1/2 cup of silk creamer
1 & 1/2 cup Soy, Almond or Hemp milk
2/3 cup of sweetener (organic sugar or suconat)
3 teaspoons cinnamon

PREPARATION:
1. Boil noodles according to package directions.
2. In a large bowl, beat Earth Balance, tofu cream cheese, creamer, cashew butter, silken tofu, sweetener, vanilla, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and non-dairy milk.
3. Stir in Raisins.
4. Drain noodles, and add to mixture.
5.Pour into pan, cover and refrigerate overnight.
6. The next day, about two hours before the meal, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
7. Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon and 1 tablespoon of vegan sugar on top, and then bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 1 hour.
8. Cool for 10-20 minutes before serving. Fershtay?

If you want to know what all the Yiddish words I used mean, use this handy little Yiddish Dictionary.

2. Kitchen Hell! (Yes, Gordon planned to eat the lamb depicted – but was beat to the chase last summer by a predator that found the lamb on the sexy Beckhams’ estate.) After his cheesy Paris “Kitchen Nightmare” episode, Gordon Ramsey’s chef skills have proven to fail miserably when it comes to veg food. 3. Scandal! Thanks to Ari at Scent of Scandal, (home of soy candles like “Double D” that smells like Melons) we find that Al Gore recently gave a speech on TED.com which is kind of like a brief addendum to An Inconvenient Truth. It’s about 30 minutes long and is quite inspiring. He’s extremely passionate and moving.

4. Oceans in Danger! Speaking of Al Gore, I had the opportunity to meetalgore and get photographed with him last night at Current TV’s advertising event. I’ve produced videos for Current in the past, and plan to do more in the future. I was shocked, however, to find beef & shrimp – two of the most notoriously ecologically destructive foods for global warming and oceans being served AT AL GORE’S EVENT. All I would eat were damned vegetable kabobs and liquor. In Peggy Bundy’s voice, “AaaaL!”

5. Free Trade? Assasinations! The Columbia/US trade deal that Nancy Pelosi and Teamsters General Prez Jim Hoffa (official Obama supporter) are pissed-off about has to do with the fact that more than 2,500 trade unionists have been assassinated in Colombia, and very little has been done to bring their murderers to justice. Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents 1.4 million hardworking men and women in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/teamsters_logo.gif

“All of these trade deals are hurting American workers, but this one is especially bad because of Colombia’s horrible human rights record,” Hoffa said. “No agreement with Colombia should be considered until the government prosecutes the killers of trade unionists and until the union killings stop. Already this year, 11 trade unionists have been killed. It will take years to address the decades of violence and impunity that has taken place.”

6. Guns Germs and More Germs! Speaking of Current TV, I grabbed this news story off of their homepage:

“Amazonian tribes have called for film and television crews to be banned from their territories after a British production company was accused of starting a flu epidemic that killed four members of a remote Indian people.

Image...

As if we hadn’t already done enough to completely fuck over all indigenous peoples, we are systematically destroying all hope for human survival after civilization. These are the only people who know how to survive succesfully (look at their track record!) outside of our civilization – when they go away, so does their intimate knowledge of the earth – knowledge we are less and less likely to recover as every single day goes by. Shame!

7. Animal Planet Goes Ape-Shit! Animal Planet’s new series RAW NATURE,//216.122.128.205/images/uploads/ANIMAL-PLANET.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors. gives viewers:

“… an unprecedented and immersive look at the intersection between human nature and animal instinct. The fearless filmmakers of RAW NATURE strike out across the globe to give first-hand accounts of dedicated wildlife professionals working to help animals survive human encroachment. Among other stories, the series showcases a man who’s dedicated his life to rescuing poached sloth bears forced to entertain and dance on the streets of Agra, India, and a biologist in Sumatra who’s doing everything she can to help save the orangutan population from total extinction.”

Only time will tell if this is a legit show trying to help animals – or just another “extreme” nature show exploiting and stereotyping nature. RAW NATURE premieres Tuesday, April 29, at 9 PM (ET/PT) and airs for five consecutive weeks.

Carbon Upsets

http://www.aworldtowin.net/images/images330/CarbonNeutralMyth.jpg

I have been a skeptic of ‘carbon offsetting’ since I first heard about it last year. For some reason, it just never made sense to me – how can you purchase away your impact on the environment? It’s reminiscent of days when the fearfully-faithful would purchase their sins (indulgences) away and get a ticket to heaven simply by giving money to the church. In both cases, someone is getting rich off of guilt-ridden businesses and individuals, who rather than changing their ‘sinful’ destructive ways, can simply pay for salvation.

//www.windows.ucar.edu/earth/climate/images/windfarm_sm.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.Let’s say I want to keep driving my car, and get one of those nifty “this vehicle is carbon neutral” bumper stickers by investing in a few trees being planted and a wind farm that’s already been built. Problem is, this doesn’t erase the impact of my car and the wind farm is already producing energy without my money. Trees should be planted regardless, and not as an offset to continue business as usual. Solar//www.ikea.com/ms/en_US/img/about_ikea/tree250x250.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors. parks should be made regardless. Wind farms should be made regardless. The point is, the playing field was not even at the conception of carbon neutrality. There was already an ecological and climate crisis underway.

Can individuals and companies truly offset their emissions by paying for trees to be planted (the main method of offsetting)? These trees supposedly soak up any emissions created, allowing people and corporations to continue polluting with clear consciences. One thing a pursuit of carbon-credit-rendered neutrality doesn’t do is discourage fossil fuel use, or any other environmental issue for that matter; biodiversity loss, overpopulation, pollution, overconsumption, etc..

A Norwegian Arctic measuring station in April reported that carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere had reached a new peak, at 394 parts per million! Is something not making sense here? What about this whole Greenwashed Revolution? I thought compact florescent lights, canvas bags, and organic bananas were going to save our civilization from chewing up all the resources and spitting out nothing but pollution and waste at exponentially increasing rates… Are you saying we actually have to change our economic model? Gasp!

Just this week, the Financial Times argued that Carbon Trading could easily become the wold’s leading derivatives product. Just a few days prior, a Financial Times investigation uncovered widespread failings in the new markets for greenhouse gases, suggesting some organizations are paying for emissions reductions that do not actually take place. Can you imagine? Someone is getting rich by co-opting a social and political movement! I mean, it’s not like Diesel Jeans has capitalized on Global Warming. Oh.. wait…

One major problem with the concept of Carbon Neutrality is the failure to discourage ecologically destructive practices. Instead, the option to invest in other companies’ energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives – which, according to the FT investigation, often go unfulfilled – is a dangerous game of guess-work and promises. Remember, this is the same attempt-at-a-movement in which we’ve seen corn grown on slash & burned Rain Forest land to make ethanol (If this isn’t backwards, I don’t know what is).

The growing political salience of environmental politics has sparked a “green gold rush”, which has seen a dramatic expansion in the number of businesses offering both companies and individuals the chance to go “carbon neutral”, offsetting their own energy use by buying carbon credits that cancel out their contribution to global warming. - Industry caught in carbon ‘smokescreen’ By Fiona Harvey and Stephen Fidler, Published: Apr 25, 2007

The April 14th issue of Newsweek asks “Who’s The Greenest of Them All? ” about our Presidential candidates. Can the candidates see through the greenwashing and pursue a true environmental ideal – or will we be seeing more scams like carbon offsetting? The issue finds out where the presidential candidates stand on the environment and what’s keeping environmental groups from endorsing one of them. The cover package also includes the top 10 fixes for the planet, none of which I’m SURE is going veg – even though being vegan, according to the UN Report, should be numero uno on every greenie’s list.

As far as I’m concerned (am I’m just a blogger, so feel free to send hate mail) consumer-capitalism is simply not sustainable. At it’s very core is a desire for unbridled consumption and expansion which is just a fantasy given the limits of a finite planet with finite resources. A child can grasp that concept, yet our most celebrated economists choose to continue living in la la land.

One of my major concerns with having such an intensive focus on Global Warming is the loss of emphasis on other ecological and environmental crises – we are currently experiencing an extinction event, yet that rarely makes news.

To find out what you can do, visit Carbon Trade Watch. According to their report:

This report argues that offsets place disproportionate emphasis on individual lifestyles and carbon footprints, distracting attention from the wider, systemic changes and collective political action that needs to be taken to tackle climate change. Promoting more effective and empowering approaches involves moving away from the marketing gimmicks, celebrity endorsements, technological quick fixes, and the North/South exploitation that the carbon offsets industry embodies.

Vegan Gladiators & Their (Supposed) Sandals

http://sharpiron.files.wordpress.com/2007/10/attacking_gladiator.jpg

Did you know that the real-deal Gladiators were vegans? These overweight warriors who ate nothing but barely and beans shatter the pervasive stereotype of frail, weak herbivores. Analysis of the bones of more than 70 gladiators found in 2004 near Ephesus, the Roman capital of Asia Minor, contradicts traditional Hollywood images of macho carnivores with the physique of superheroes as well. Forensic anthropologists revealed these fighters had thicker bone density than their omnivorous counterparts – shattering yet another stereotype of the vegan diet; the calcium myth. How did they treat animals? That’s another story – and apparently, they didn’t actually wear sandals either. They fought bare-foot! But in accordance with the popular fantasy that they did don stylish, strappy sandals – here are a few styles to choose from that will certainly not get you a thumbs down.
