Wax Weather

Waxed canvas could be my favorite new fabric. It’s waterproof, wind resistant, supple, and shares many characteristics with leather (minus the whole killing-of-animals part). Autumn is known for crisp air, rain, and chilly breezes. My advice for fall is waxed cotton all the way from boots to hats. Stay dry, warm, and light! The good thing about these jackets is that they’ll last you forever, and since they’re classics, they never go out of style.

Barbour

Barbour makes several styles of really nice waxed jackets and hats. I recently got to view four different jackets, and I was told that all their labor is done in Europe (no sweatshops) and their waxes are totally animal-friendly. The Flyer, below, is my favorite for this fall. It’s lightweight, insulated, and has nice detailing. The jacket has a 100% cotton Barbour tartan lining with 30 gauge wadding for extra warmth. Two way front zip under a studded front, cord inner collar with buckle front tap, knitted rib hem and cuffs. Retail $375 Wax Flyer JacketWax Flyer Jacket

If you are looking for a more edgy jacket, the International Trials Short Jacket, below,  is a slimmer, shorter length version of Barbour’s iconic motorcycle design. I suggest wearing this style over a slender suit, open with the belt buckled. This jacket is in Barbour’s medium-weight 6 oz. Sylkoil wax with a 100% cotton Barbour tartan lining. Two-way front zip under a studded storm fly front with set-in sleeves and ventilation eyelets. PU Coated polyamide inner drip strip for extra weather protection, corduroy collar and cuffs, and multiple pockets. Retail $379 International Trials ShortInternational Trials ShortGoes Great with:

Finally, if you’re looking for a longer coat, the Cowen Commando is one of Barbour’s most famous styles. this modern wax jacket was designed from a historic British army pattern, with a Union Jack badge to prove it. Barbour’s heavyweight 8 oz. Weathered wax with tartan lining. The jacket also features reinforced shoulder panels,  a drawcord waist with adjustable toggles and multiple pockets. Belstaff

Belstaff’s waxed cotton is more expensive than Barbour (averaging around $530). They are gorgeous and leather-free, but they do incorporate Teflon in their canvass, which is toxic, and made by DuPont, a known vivisector and environmental polluter. Therefore I cannot recommend these jackets, and I suggest writing a kind letter to DuPont expressing your disdain for outdated and cruel animal testing, and CC Belstaff!

David Morgan

For a more affordable autumn jacket, David Morgan offers a oil-finish, waxed cotton jacket called the Shelter Cloth Jacket (retail $160). It has a marbleized color, utility pocket, and moleskin collar (don’t worry, moleskin is actually cotton). David Morgan also offers a pretty bad-ass trench coat called The Duster (retail $285).Shelter Cloth JacketGoes Great with:

Fur Season Prescription

Yes, it’s that time of year again! When the stores roll out the fur racks and the egos swell into furry puffs of animals’ skins to showcase big wealth, uber-luxury, and so-called ‘high-class’. What are fabulous, anti-fur peeps to do? Duh… Get loud and get organized… and get on it NOW.

More and more men wear fur

Last year there was almost no anti-fur presence on the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn, and the thousands of Cruella DeVilles too often went unchallenged on the public sidewalks. Obnoxious hipsters are wearing those flappy fur hats by the thousands, and gals are dragging corpses uptown and downtown.

Hipsters wear this

That’s why this year I am putting a call out to get sophisticated, and get started early. We need classy fashionistos and fashionistas to gather materials, strategies, ideas, and events so there is a strong anti-fur presence coming from a place that is intimidating. We want people to know Fur is not welcome in our cities and towns. I’m not talking about picketing…

We need to come at this problem from two places, the web and the street.

WEB:

1. Use social networking sites like Facebook and Myspace to send out your personalized call to action, or to expose the fur industry. This is the one I typically send out (make sure to attach images of animals typically used for fur in their uncaged/untrapped cuteness and then link to a video or image of a fur farm):

Hello Friends!

The seasons to bundle up are quickly approaching. Unfortunately there are many people who try to stay warm in the most horrible way – that’s right, fur season is back.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTZQnQeAPJc]

I can’t imagine that people in the fashion industry continue to use fur. Designers are often bullied into including fur in their collections with threats from magazine editors who are paid off by the fur industry to exclude their lines unless they comply. Many other people simply have no idea how fur garments are made – or don’t want to know.

By ignoring the ways in which the things we purchase and support are made, we silence the cries of those who are tortured. The truth is often too horrible for us to believe, so many of us lie to ourselves. We deny that their cries even exist, because if their cries did exist, they would be impossible to ignore and it would mean we would have to change.

The cries of the fox, chinchilla, or rabbit who are vaginally and anally electrocuted to death – the raccoon who is bludgeoned to death, the mink or chinchilla whose neck is snapped, the beaver whose ribcage is crushed, and whose miserable life is spent caged, malnourished, and unloved in a death-camp, are silenced. The wild Lynx who chews her own arm off to escape, or slowly bleeds to death in a steel trap is no better off.

While a huge amount of fur imported from Asia is in fact dog and cat fur, we wouldn’t be wearing fur if the animal were our own dog or cat. So what’s the difference?

This winter, please speak for the silenced. Let people know that their fur and fur-trim is the product of a tortured, murdered, and silenced animal – and it is anything but sexy, chic, and classy.

Please join fashion icons Stella McCartney, Calvin Klein and Kenneth Cole, supermodel Christy Turlington, Actress Charlize Theron, Pink, Ellen, Martha Stewart, Danity Kane and others on http://furisdead.com/ and http://www.hsus.org/furfree/ to learn more about fur and what you can do to help.

Feel free to pass this letter along.

Joshua

2. Send a letter to an editor, a magazine, or a company that is selling or promoting fur – and make it print-worthy. Unfortunately this is almost every magazine, newspaper, and department store.
Here’s how: http://www.hsus.org/furfree/resources/letters_to_the_editor_about_fur.html

STREET:

1. Fur Walks: Simple! Gather 4 or 5 of your friends, and get decked out in awesome outfits, and appear as if you’re stylish luminaries on your way to a dinner or an event, and who just so happen to continually come across people in fur, so you just have to say something. No pins, posters, or picket lines! This is stealth-mode! Come up with a few clever/interesting things to start a conversation like, “Where did you get that coat?”.

2. Video / Leaflet / Interview presence: Lets gather our resources on literature, portable video capabilities, and media skills to turn the tables on how people see activism. Everyone wants to be a star, so if we approach people in fur as if we are reporters, asking their opinions and starting conversation that way, it is much easier to give them literature and get through. Plus we can direct them back to our blogs/websites because they’ll love to see themselves! One of my favorite ideas is to use a camera and host method where you make video interviews of people in fur where our stylish/funny host interviews them on camera and starts the dialogue that way.

Proposition

This November, California has an amazing opportunity to become a beacon of compassion and equality among a sea of fear, ignorance, and greed.

Prop 2: Vote YES!

Prop 2 could easily be the most import farm animal anti-cruelty legislation ever. California’s Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act, which will reduce the suffering of 20 million hens, pigs, and calves—will lead to changes across the nation. Battery cages, veal crates, and gestation crates do not allow animals to turn around, spread their wings or legs, or even lie down. This initiative is up against big wealthy  agribusiness. Please make a donation today. If you live in California, you must vote YES!

Prop 8: Vote NO!

No on Prop 8 is being supported hugely from celebrities like Brad Pitt and Steven Speilberg. The christian right is attempting to take away basic freedom from same-gender couples. Every Californian should have the choice to marry the person they love. It’s a personal and fundamental freedom guaranteed by the California Constitution. But this November, Californians will have an opportunity to vote on Prop. 8, it’s not right for California, and it’s not right for you. Vote No, and see what esle you can do to help.

No Basement in the Alamo: Going Veg in San Antonio

I was in San Antonio, Texas last week – living out my Pee Wee’s Big Adventure fantasies and exploring the liberal pockets in that big red state. It’s true that the stars at night are big and bright. The River Walk is very quaint and touristy, and the shopping district was full of Mexican artisans and not so cow-friendly products.

I was thrilled to find the only 100% vegetarian joint in San Antonio – Green Vegetarian Cuisine & Coffee. I enjoyed a yummy toasted sourdough grinder with breaded tofu, special sauce, and spicy kale salad. They also offered incredible vegan soft serve that put Atlas and Penny Licks to shame. Step it up New York City! Get some soft serve where there’s cones (Pennylicks!) and get some cones where there’s soft serve (Atlas!). The following day, I had the glazed Neat-Loaf which was so tasty that I could live on it for a week. My server was super-friendly and helpful. If you are in Texas, definitely stop by!

Best Of: Midtown Eco Showcase

Boho - A New American SpiritThis week in midtown Manhattan, designers gathered at the Agent Red International Showroom who hosted The Green Gallery Eco Press Showcase to showcase eco clothing and accessories ranging from bags and belts to knits and formal wear. I met several of the designers and the stylish brains behind Boho Magazine, which launched at the event. Here are the highlights:

SDN

SDN

SDN is a Brooklyn-based line featuring menswear made from organic cotton, soy, and bamboo. Striped waistcoats, western button-downs and denim jumpsuits were the highlights, as well as the handsome, cuffed chinos. I have to get a pair of those! SDN can be purchased at www.sodafine.com and www.kaightnyc.com. The pants do come with the option of suspenders that have leather detailing, so you can avoid those – and some of the sportscoats incorporate silk in the lining.

English Retreads

English Retreads

English Retreads was started by Heather English almost a decade ago. Her bags and accessories already have over 60,000 miles each! Tough, green, and bad-ass, my favorites are the wallet, the Bentley, and the Large Beetle. ER also does dog collars and belts!

reVINYLized

revinylized

REVINYLIZED accessories are made from used billboards that would otherwise add hundreds of pounds each to landfills. The tote, the messenger bags, and the toiletry bag are my favorite picks. Many of them are lined with organic or recycled cotton.
