I didnt realize until i read this article the fast growing rate of vegetarians all around the world. The fact that we have around a 3% vegetarian population is amazing. Just knowing that around 6-8 million Americans do not eat meat is really mind blowing to me. I do eat meat and i understand the process behind it. Since i do care about animals i do not eat more meat then i have to and i am very great full when i do eat meat.

Projection! Projection! Projection!

Nonvegans are doing exactly what they accuse us of–elitist, extreme, irrational. And why are they ones who are acting as if they are the victims? Then again, it’s very telling of how powerful a minority is when you have the majority acting like the zealots they fondly accuse us of being (have I mentioned projection?) I also agree with Donna’s comment. People love saying that it’s their choice and that vegans shouldn’t be pushing their “beliefs” on others. How is it a belief or a personal choice when someone is enslaved and exploited? These aren’t MY beliefs, nor are they yours. To genuinely respect a nonhuman’s life is an unwritten law everyone must abide by so really, even if vegans didn’t exist, it would still be wrong no matter what anyone says. To inject a literal argument in here, interestingly a vegan Atheist, vegan Buddhist, vegan Christian, vegan Jew, vegan Pagan, vegan Jain and a vegan Muslim all follow differing beliefs yet they all agree on one thing: animal exploitation is abhorrent.

I’d also like to know why the nonhuman animals who have to be kidnapped, raped, enslaved, tortured and murdered are completely lost in the vegan vs. nonvegan debate?

You picked apart that immensely shallow article nicely. Annoying as it was, I don’t think it is very new. This just means that animal rights is getting noticed more and more. A minority lashes back with great anger. It’s similar to when women’s rights were finally breaking through the media landscape in terms of characters in films and TV shows, people coming out and more. Some felt (feel) completely threatened by that. Similarly with gay rights. One or two blockbusters that leave the boy meets girl format a bit and some starts yelling about a gay conspiracy and the need for a “hetero pride” march. In all these cases we just have to reply calmly and we will win.

These “I’m okay with it” people are disgusting beyond belief. They act as if they can personally decide who lives and who dies as long as they witness it.

I love you, Joshua. Thank you for such a clean and precise slice through the mental meat of the puffed up carnivore. The third paragraph is brilliant: “One thing we know for sure is that in almost every single case, an animal will not willingly subject him or herself to the customs of the slaughterhouse. They want to live and they want to avoid suffering, and this is demonstrated in their own behavior, not in a person’s belief. If animal advocacy were a religion based in personal belief and blind faith, as opposed to a very real social justice, scientific, and advocacy movement, it would conveniently suit Covington’s argument.”
