The Evolution of Man: Carol Adams

As part of my ongoing exploration into male identity and its ties to consuming animals, I had the honor of interviewing one of the most respected thinkers on this, Carol Adams. Adams wroteThe Sexual Politics of Meat, published first in 1990, to explore the relationship between patriarchal values and meat eating by interweaving the insights of feminism, vegetarianism, animal defense, and literary theory. She also wrote The Pornography of Meat, published in 2003, posing the question, “how does someone become a piece of meat?“.

Fantastic interview, thank you for this. I like the idea of shirking masculinity and femininity as obsolete.

Compassion doesn’t disable us; a very powerful notion. I think we should challenge any ‘disabling narrative’ that says otherwise. Thank you for this interview, Carol Adams is very impressive and I’m looking forward to reading some of her work. You’ve given me a lot to think about.

Thank you for this great interview! My experience as a vegan male is that other men pretty commonly switch to machismo jokes when veganism is brought up. A coping strategy towards something felt as threatening. You can sense the nervousness under the surface. I’m often not sure how to handle those situations because you’re coming up against two entrenched habits at once: that of eating meat and that of machismo. I like how the cases of vegan MMA fighters so effectively pry apart the assumed compound of maleness, strength and meat eating. But being no MMA candidate (to say the least) I still feel that I lack good conversational strategies for those situations.
