Deer Control Suit & Jil Sander Suit

A lot of you guys ask about wool-free suits. Jil Sander surprised us with a few cruelty-free options recently, featured on GILT Groupe. The wool-free suit below features textured woven cotton on a single breasted two button jacket with notch lapel, a center vent at back and non-functional button cuffs. Fully lined in cupro with three pockets.

Jil Sander‘s Nylon Marble Blazer and Cupro/Nylon Iridescent Blazer are also cruelty free and quite stunning.

GILT is an invite only site (click here to join). They do often feature organic brands like Loomstate and Edun, but also occasionally feature designers who continue to use fur, so take a moment to kindly ask them to stop featuring these items from designers like Michael Kors and tell them we want more cruelty-free stuff.

Our pals at Friends of Animals and CARE have a suit of their own. They are suing to stop National Park Service deer control plans. Deer “control” is always a tumultuous topic, and this case really highlights the opposing forces. I always find it amusing that it is the wildlife that is the problem, as opposed to our ever-expanding, ever-”developing” of wild areas:
Photo of white-tailed deer doe in the snow

“The deer are not responsible for the park’s manicured lawns, for deliberate removals of natural vegetation over the years and the planting of non-native foliage, for a lack of respect for the animals comprising the park’s natural food web, for paved areas and buildings, for more than a million visitors per year, vehicle exhaust, or for the constant presence of (often speeding) cars. These factors must be addressed directly to address the pressure on the deer, Friends of Animals and CARE have urged.”  – FOA

What do you think about deer “control” and other ideas we have about “pests”?

FOOD, INC. is a film exposing the food industry’s dirty secrets:

In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that’s been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government’s regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation’s food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment.

Lula's Sweet Apothecary

lulas3

Lula’s Sweet Apothecary is a small, cabinet of curiosities and Ice Cream parlor tucked away in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. I’ve been frequenting their shop, which has given the other vegan-friendly dessert joints (what’s their names again?) a serious run for their money. Lula’s is 100% vegan owned and operated, and will rocky-road your world!

The re-emergence of early 1900s decor is exemplified in this adorable, vintage-drug-store-inspired wonder-room where handmade, artisan, vegan delights line the walls in candy-shop jars, and rare vegan toppings (white chocolate, malt powder, peanut butter cups!) reside in card-catalogue drawers, neatly labeled. Even the friendly owners seem to have been plucked from a 1920′s photograph and the music should be coming out of a gramophone.

lulas

With nutmilk, coconut cream, and soymilk-based ice cream creations like the hugely popular cake batter and brownie batter or the traditional rocky road (complete with Sweet & Sara marshmallows), maple walnut, and even chocolate-vanilla-swirl soft-serve – Lula’s blows my mind. Last night, I enjoyed a brownie sundae with hot fudge, soy whipped cream, and a cherry on top. They have a rotating array of innovative flavors and confections. I have yet to try the New York Egg Cream (no egg, no cream), or a malted milk shake, but the hot cocoa, which was topped with fresh-shaved dark-chocolate, was brilliant, and the menu is extensive. One thing I know is that this place will have a line out the door come summer-time.

Pointers, Alters and Sustainers

blackcarnaby

The Black Carnaby from Vegetarian Shoes UK looks like any pointy oxford you’d see on the runway. The difference is that this  shoe is made from eco and animal-friendly vegetan, as opposed to someone’s toxically-preserved skin.

One of our favorite shops, Alter, is having a big sale on everything fall 08. There are tons of animal-friendly options, and everything is up to 70% off! For example, this Spiewalk Cotton-Moleskin jacket with Thinsulate lining is only $155, and will keep you warm for the next four months!

Another great place to stop by is the new and imporved Sustainable NYC shop. They’ve got a cafe, now – with lots of veg options (not sure why everything isn’t vegan). Also make sure to check out their online store.
