Running With Russell, Vegetable Frenzy & Rise of the Power Vegans

Ryan Olbrysh,  www.lasvegassun.com

• Power Vegan. What does this phase connote? According to the Business Week article from Nov. 4th, The Rise of the Power Vegan is an interesting turn of events for a culture of executives and power-players who want to take control of their own health, and thrive for as long as possible.

…a growing number of America’s most powerful bosses have become vegan. Steve Wynn, Mort Zuckerman, Russell Simmons, and Bill Clinton are now using tempeh to assert their superiority. As are Ford Executive Chairman of the Board Bill Ford (F), Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, venture capitalist Joi Ito, Whole Foods Market (WFMI) Chief Executive Officer John Mackey, and Mike Tyson. Yes, Mike Tyson, a man who once chewed on human ear, is now vegan

• A new, slightly controversial article in New York Magazine explores why vegetables are the new meat, becoming the focus of entrees at unlikely restaurants throughout cities famous for fervent foodies. Vegetables Are the New Meat, they say – but they make sure to distinguish themselves from vegetarians, still calling on meat, butter, and cheese for flavor. What do you think about the “vegivore” trend?  Leave a comment!

“Sales are up 15 to 20 percent,” says Mountain Sweet Berry Farm’s Rick Bishop, whose spigarello broccoli and spring-ushering ramps have cult followings at Union Square. “You see lines at the market now for vegetables. People used to only line up for eggs and fish.”

• If you like football, but hate the stereotype of the meat-maniacs that fill the parking lots, you’ll love Peta’s list of the Top 5 Vegetarian-Friendly NFL Stadiums:

  1. 1. Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia Eagles), where protein-packed mock-steak sandwiches, faux-chicken sandwiches, veggie dogs, and veggie burgers are coming off the grill faster than DeSean Jackson in the open field.
  2. 2. Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum (Oakland Raiders)
  3. 3. Lambeau Field (Green Bay Packers)
  4. 4. Georgia Dome (Atlanta Falcons)
  5. 5. (Tie) Arrowhead Stadium (Kansas City Chiefs) & Ford Field (Detroit Lions)

• I made my debut on Oxygen Network’s Running Russell Simmons last night, where I was drenched in fake blood and wrapped up in a meat tray in times square! So may people have been Tweeting that they are considering going veg! Thanks to the amazing Simone for asking me to join her at this event! Bob Harper Video Interview

Being a loser was never so cool. When I was in Los Angeles a few weeks ago I sat down with Bob Harper, host of NBC’s Biggest Loser to discuss his role as the 2010 National Spokesperson for Farm Sanctuary’s Walk for Farm Animals. We discussed his recent evolution to a vegan diet, how he grew up on a cattle farm, and or course, food and nutrition! Check out the full interview, and sign up for the Walk for Farm Animals in your town! The new season of NBC’s Biggest Loser premieres tonight.

Viva Las Vegans & Chrissie Hynde’s Clothing Line

A scenic view of the Wynn Las Vegas.Steve Wynn

• Vegans of Nevada and ethical gambling tourists will rejoice now that there are dozens of vegan dining options …available at Wynn Las Vegas and Encore Las Vegas, two resorts operated by mogul Steve Wynn, who recently decreed that every restaurant at his Vegas properties would provide several vegan choices. That includes, yes, even the lowly buffet, which now has a vegan dessert section,” according to AOL News. The 68-year-old casino mogul is rumored to have gone vegan recently. Read the full story here.

• Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders is set to launch a line of clothing called Fairground Luck, featuring “leather” jackets, skinny jeans, and cowboy boots  – all totally vegan, according to WWD. The line is a collaboration with her recording partner, JP Jones, a Welsh singer – and this leads me to believe (and hope) that the line includes things for men! Discerning Brute pals Todd Oldham and John Bartlett are rumored to have consulted on the line. Full Article.

EDUN: Grow to Sew

5206248fa-100_frontEDUN, started in 2005 by Ali Hewson and Bono, has relaunched their website, and along with it, a crucial new initiative: Grow to Sew. One hundred percent of proceeds from the Grow to Sew series will go to the Conservation Cotton Initiative (CCI) in Uganda, an organic farming program created by EDUN and the Wildlife Conservation Society that aims to build sustainable, organic farming communities and offer farmers a fair trade market for their cotton. This comes at the first signs of peace after decades of civil war, strife, and unrest in this once-fertile, cotton growing region of Uganda called Gulu.

As part of the Pre Fall Collection created in honor of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, EDUN introduces a Special Edition Grow to Sew African produced tee shirt series, which features organic cotton, and bold black and white graphics inspired by the vibrancy of the continent. Included in this series is a “South Africa 2010” soccer ball graphic tee that features the shape of the African continent at the center of the ball.

In addition to this initiative, EDUN’s mens’ A/W 2010 collection is looking tremendous with subtle grays, slate blues, tans, and olive. All fair trade, mostly organic cotton. I love everything EDUN stands for, but I do wish they’d ditch that one leather jacket they offer, being that livestock is the worst ecological offender out there ( and it’s just mean) – and there are so many amazing, sustainable  alternatives.

Comme des Garçon’s WONDERWOOD

• Someone who loved wood more than words could say? Sounds like one of us. Trees, forests, nature, and the smell of wood is something that echos in the most primal part of our brains. Guys who get down with sophisticated, organic smells will probably love Wonderwood, and being that Jaisalmer is my favorite scent – with hints of cardamon, cinnamon, pepper, benzoin, ebony wood and gaiac wood, I have a feeling I’ll love this one too.  The Brother’s Quay, a pair of renowned animators known for their distinct, dream-like, and haunting imagery, have crafted a gorgeous, hallucinatory short film to usher in the new scent.  It is screening on thelovemagazine.co.uk exclusively all this week. (Thanks to HINT for the hint!)

It’s sometimes hard to tell when a scent is cruelty-free, so I put in a call to Comme des Garçon’s offices in London and Paris to check if the fragrances would be considered suitable for vegans, and whether or not they’re tested on animals. The Europeans were not phased by the question one bit.  I was told that there are no animal-derived ingredients in the scents, and that the labs do not test on animals, but could not be given a 100% guarantee. I am in the process of following-up to get that guarantee, but so far, this is great to know! Now I’ll see if I can convince them to put the leaping-bunny or certified vegan logo on their packaging. Stay tuned.

PARISIAN PIONEER: C-PAS’ Pierre-André Senizergues

Pierre-André Senizergues has a Hollywood story. He went from a Parisian childhood, to being homeless on the streets of Venice Beach, to becoming an international skateboarding champion and then one of the most influential and respected businessmen in the apparel and skate industry, heading-up Sole Technologies, Inc. Now, with over 25 years of revolutionizing skate culture, Pierre is again setting new standards and breaking new boundaries with social responsibility and environmentalism. C-PAS is Pierre’s latest personal endeavor, and along with designer Pierluigi Pucci, Senizergues is making menswear from recycled parachutes and tarps, organic cotton, soda bottles, sustainable fabrics, and he is finally addressing the fact that leather can never be sustainable.

I stopped by the Soho, NYC studio to try on some of the clothes, and chat about C-PAS, sustainable fashion, and menswear.

San Francisco Treats: Wholesome Bakery & PACT Organic Underwear

http://platform.ak.fbcdn.net/www/app_full_proxy.php?app=23798139265&v=1&size=o&cksum=e8cf37de65d751a29173a22523b43cb8&src=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wearpact.com%2Fblog%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2010%2F04%2FGBMblog.jpg

Let’s make a PACT. Sustainably manufactured, premium organic cotton underwear for men (and women)! PACT just released its newest print — one designed by African architect David Adjaye and inspired by Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai’s Green Belt Movement, a nonprofit that promotes peace and democracy in Africa through tree planting.

PACT underwear is designed in collaboration with Yves Behar and fuseproject, the industrial design studio behind the Jawbone headset, the One Laptop per Child XO Laptop and the Herman Miller LEAF lamp. Each underwear collection is developed in partnership with a nonprofit, which gets 10% of all sales, and an artist who creates print designs inspired by the nonprofit’s work.

My pal (and vegan model) Jayce Alexander, strips down to his undies in this video for PACT:

Wholesome Bakery in San Fran has a brand new location and is serving up some amazing treats. Have any of you visited? If so, what are the must-have treats?

Earth Is Not Effed. Maybe.

Mother Earth is suicidal. I was asked to appear in a video for Earth Day and help talk her down. The funny folks at Grist, are responsible for this, so don’t blame me.

VEGANIK: SKIN TRADE, FORKS OVER KNIVES & BOLD NATIVE

By contributor Nik Tyler

From fur to food to animal liberation… 3 new cinematic eye-openers.
I can feel it in the wind – 2010 is gonna’ continue to be an awesome year for powerful and inspiring cinema!! Following in the path of such successful and thought-provoking films as THE COVE & FOOD, INC., three soon-to-be released films entitled SKIN TRADE, FORKS OVER KNIVES and BOLD NATIVE, are going to profoundly impact and inspire our society to take a stand and change the planet for the better!
.
.
.

SKIN TRADE

I attended an advanced screening of the documentary SKIN TRADE at Warner Brothers on February 25th. Having previously seen the director, Shannon Kieth’s, first documentary, BEHIND THE MASK, (an intense, riveting & ultra-inspiring story about the Animal Liberation Front) I was anxious to see what her second project would be like.
.
I’m pleased, but not surprised, to say that this film is just as powerful as her first. Shannon is definitely a “truth seeker” and in SKIN TRADE she exposes the brutal realities behind the cruel and gruesome fur trade. Through devastating, nightmarish undercover footage inside fur farms as well as several informative interviews with some of my favorite people (“Skinny Bitch” author Rory Freedman, Actors/Activists James Cromwell, Martin Sheen, Jorja Fox & Ed Begley Jr., former NBA star John Salley, and the Discerning Brute himself, Joshua Katcher, just to name a few…) SKIN TRADE’s unrelentingly look into the fur industry dispels all the dumb myths associated with this very bloody, completely abominable business.
.
I highly recommend everyone get a copy of this film stat! Whether you’re familiar with the atrocities of the fur biz, or you’ve never looked into it before, I guarantee, you will be profoundly affected, and most definitely inspired to tell all your friends and family to boycott fur and fur trim forever! http://skintradethemovie.com/

FORKS OVER KNIVES

Shortly after seeing SKIN TRADE, I was invited to another screening of an equally enlightening film called FORKS OVER KNIVES. Written/directed by Lee Fulkerson and executive produced by Brian L. Wendel, FOK discusses the power of a plant-based diet in preventing and even reversing degenerative diseases such as heart disease, several forms of cancers, as well as type 2 diabetes.
.
The majority of the film follows the fascinating journeys of the incomparable Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn (a former surgeon at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic) & Dr. T. Colin Campbell (a nutritional scientist from Cornell University who penned the brilliant book, THE CHINA STUDY), who conducted several brilliant health studies, including one of the most comprehensive health-related investigations ever made. In the film, these two incredibly eloquent, engaging and intelligent physicians are on a mission to help treat several ailing patients who are living miserably with chronic conditions and an overload of prescription medications. The two doctors teach these ailing individuals how to adopt a whole foods plant-based diet as their primary approach to remedying their health issues. Soon enough, all of these sick people have thrown their pill bottles away, replacing the chemical compounds with fresh veggies; and the results speak for themselves! All of these previously-ill patients begin to gain back control of their lives and get healthy!
.
FORKS OVER KNIVES is entertaining, informative, inspiring and literally life-changing. When the film was over, I felt invigorated and enlightened; I have no doubt that this documentary is going to dramatically change the way we prevent and cure disease in the world. So, give yourself the ultimate gift of a healthier life and check out this film as soon as it’s available! You can stay in the know by visiting the film’s official site for updates on a possible theatrical release near you, as well as where and when you can purchase dvd copies: http://forksoverknives.com/

BOLD NATIVE

I feel extremely lucky and proud to be a part of this very unique narrative film, which is set to be released on DVD this summer. BOLD NATIVE, a political-thriller with a lot of heart, directed by Denis Hennelly and produced by Casey Suchan & Mary Pat Bentel, tells the riveting fictional story of “Charlie Cranehill”, an animal liberator wanted for domestic terrorism. The film follows Charlie and several other colorful characters (one of which is me ) as he emerges from the underground to organize and execute a nationwide action to liberate innocent animals being tortured in factory farms and testing facilities. All along, Charlie must out-maneuver the FBI who are quickly closing in on his tracks.
.
This film was super cool to work on; not only are the makers of the film some of the most awesome people I’ve ever worked with, but the majority of the cast consists of actors who are both animal rights activists and vegans. I know that this film’s message is going to go far. It’s not about how much money the movie can make, it’s about how far can this compassionate message travel. And I’m envisioning it reaching all across the world. For none of us can truly be free, unless all of us are free!
Please check out the trailer for the film and spread the word. BOLD NATIVE should be available to purchase on DVD at the film’s official website this summer, and if you’d like to host a public screening, please contact the makers of the film through the contact page on the website: http://boldnative.com/

It’s definitely gonna’ continue to be an amazing year for cinema and our world! With films like these to inform and inspire, our society most certainly is headed in a more peaceful and compassionate direction. I applaud all the filmmakers, truth-seekers, directors, producers, writers, actors and activists. They are exposing truths and calling on the human race to take action through growing awareness, optimum nutrition & universal respect & love for all living beings.
