Bloomingdale’s Hosts ECOLUX Pop-Up

The NYC-based “Artists & Revolutionaries” is one of several brands that NYC’s eco-fashion fans will be able to get their paws on at The Green Shows pop-up shop hosted in Bloomingdale’s from Wed April 20th – Fri April 22nd. Click here for the details.

Below are some of the menswear images from the line Artists & Revolutionaries. Designer John-Michael Schlotter uses 70% organic cotton and 30% hemp in the styles depicted below. They are hand-dyed with low impact dyes (thus each garment is unique), unisex, and one size. All Artists & Revolutionaries garments are all locally produced in Brooklyn. The flagship store is at 200 Franklin st, Brooklyn NY 11222.

(*As a disclaimer, the designer is a vegetarian, and does use recycled leather in other garments and accessories, as well as some cashmere, but these are the awesome vegan options for ya’ll)

Turk + Taylor, SS11

What do you get when you combine a recycled hot air balloon, vintage linen, organic cotton, recycled poly, dead-stock fabric, hemp, and aesthetic genius? You get Turk + Taylor’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection! I love how the cold hasn’t even hit us yet and we’re already talking about next spring! It’s like the winter won’t even happen.

I chatted with Turk + Taylor at a trade show this week and got to see this collection up close and personal. The details are meticulous, the materials are sustainable, and the colors are bold and bright. The Bohol Jacket (made from the defunct 1980s hot air balloon) was my favorite, made from blue, orange and yellow silky-soft ripstop. Enjoy these gorgeous photos from their SS11 look-book:

Get Outta Town THIS WEEKEND! If you are in the New York area and you want to hang out with some radical farm animals (radical in every sense of the word), go to the June Jamboree at Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, for crying out loud. I would totally be there, but I’m stuck in North Carolina for work, so I snuck in earlier this week and took some pics with the animals, and dined at the awesome Garden Cafe. The best part is that you don’t even need a car, a bus goes right from Penn Station to Woodstock!:

VANS gets ethically handsome with a series of shoes in recycled PET, Hemp, and organic cotton. These skate and surf lifestyle kicks feature a waste-free, lightweight outsole, 100% recycled PET plastic bottle canvas uppers and inside lining, water-based inks and glues, or 100% recycled plastic bottle canvas uppers and inside lining.

Our pal over at CWC discovered a range of eco-menswear from Orvis, and I must agree that the Chambray shirt in Hemp/Organic Cotton is pretty exciting. Equally exciting are the soft hemp shirt, and the short-sleeve organic denim shirt I found.

Polos, Smoothies & Animals Rights in Washington

• A polo is great because it’s somewhere in between a dress-shirt and a tee-shirt. The sophistication of a collar and buttons combined with the comfort and casualness of a short-sleeve tee is perfect for backyard barbecues, outdoor lunch meetings, and Sunday brunches. Thrift stores are chock-full of polos, and here are some ethical polos to ponder in organic cotton, hemp, recycled poly and more:

• You don’t need a blender to make a shake. Vega’s new shake & go smoothie is great because there’s no cleanup. Only 100 calories per serving with 2500 mg Omega-3-6-9, 11 g complete protein, and 1 billion probiotics cultures. Just add two heaping tablespoons to ½-1 cup water, shake and go! • The National Journal wrote a thorough and objective article about the state of the Animal Rights movement. According to them, the sophisticated movement is gaining momentum, sharpening it’s tools, and ushering in some huge political and cultural changes – but not without a backlash from animal farmers and animal-industry-funded groups like the Center for Consumer Freedom.

Tail docking cattle is among the most disturbing practices MFA’s undercover investigator captured on film during a recent investigation of New York’s largest dairy operation. A worker uses a bladed clamp to slice off the ends of calves’ tails, severing nerves, skin and vertebrae – all without the use of anesthesia. The calves’ legs buckle from the pain, as they stagger and stumble to the ground. The worker then applies a smoking cautery device to the amputations. Find out how you can help.

Celery Hard-On, Our Legacy, and Black & Noir

• All of you Discerning Brutes out there know how difficult it is to find menswear that is distinctive, well-made, ethical, and classic. Our Legacy is a Swedish line featuring thoughtfully tailored shirting, suiting, knitwear and more. Their blazers are versatile, and cut short. Many of their shirts are inspired by cuts from the 1940′s. They do have several ethical options, including a naturally dyed, oak-buttoned blazer in hemp, a linen bomber-jacket in navy, dead-stock shirts, shirts in organic cotton, and hemp shorts and trousers in olive and camel. Everything is sweatshop-free; designed in Sweden, constructed in Portugal with Japanese fabric. I really hope to see more and more sustainable fabrics added to future collections, and for these Stockholm designers to ditch leather (why, you ask?).

http://4pack.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/celery2.jpg• Admit it, celery gives you a hard-on. A new study concluded that eating lots of celery is like “Vegetable Viagra“. It contains androstenone, a natural steroid that increases pheromone secretion, sex drive, and ups the amount of ejaculatory fluids, making climax stronger. Of course, this is not news to you guys who already know that diets heavy in meat and dairy have been linked to poor sperm quality, prostate cancer, and erectile dysfunction. Contrary to popular belief, the male hormone testosterone that determines sexual development and interest has been found to be 13 % higher in vegans than in meat-eaters.

Braintree & McDonald’s Wants Green Rock Stars

• Braintree is a UK based clothing line offering up some basics in sustainable materials. Polos, tees, henleys and button-downs in hemp, bamboo and organic cotton blends from.

The New McDonalds campaign has me rolling my eyes, not rocking out. The “Come As You Are” ad series, created by European ad agency BETC Euro RSCG, is basically the European equivalent to “I’m Lovin It” and, while making a Nirvana reference, is trying to appeal to all sorts of white people in France. They have also changed their logo colors to green! This must mean they are now environmentalists, right? Now I can get gas at BP and drive through McD’s and know they are committed to green. The color.

Thanks to Andy for the tip!

Pumping Iron & Spring Tees

• Some of my favorite organic cotton lines have unleashed their spring collections: Vuori, Loomstate, Bassike, and Howies.

Mens Wood Doesn't Grow on Trees Rain is OK

Loomstate also offers some great organic denim. I like the more fitted styles like “Manifest” and “Prophecy”. Howies has some perfect organic cotton shorts in gray, and recycled poly bathing trunks in bright, poppy red.

BasinSENECA Chubut Short Team Rider

Spring Jackets are important if you’re in an area that has a cool or rainy spring, like we do in New York. Livity has a rad hemp-fur lined, recycled poly, water repellent bomber jacket! If a Mr. Rogers is more your speed, their recycled hemp, organic cotton five-button cardigan will be your neighbor.

• Speaking of spring fashion, who wants twiggy arms coming out of their tee shirts? If you’ve ever thought about getting diesel, the guys over at VeganBodyBuilding.com have some great resources. They cover everything from nutrition and strength training, to endurance and workout techniques. They’re even working on a documentary following three vegan bodybuilders as they prepare for 12 weeks to compete in a natural bodybuilding competition in Phoenix, AZ.

Dutiful Denim

G-Star Raw, organic cotton jacket

G-Star Raw continues to be a leader both in design, and in advocacy. They use sustainable fabrics like organic cotton and they are also at the forefront where socially responsible production methods and labor are concerned. Check out G-Star’s End Poverty 2015 Campaign in affiliation with the UN’s Millennium Goals. Here’s how you can get involved.

End poverty by 2015. This is the historic promise 189 world leaders made at the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000 when they signed onto the Millennium Declaration and agreed to meet the “Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs are an eight-point road map with measurable targets and clear deadlines for improving the lives of the world’s poorest people. World leaders have agreed to achieve the MDGs by 2015.

We are looking forward to G-Star’s new collection for AW2010 and hope to report to you from the NYC Runway show next week!

Another leader in the denim world is the European line, Kuyichi. Kuichi continues to use hemp, organic cotton, linen, lenpur, spare fabric, tencel, cotton in conversion, recycled poly, recycled cotton, bamboo, natural dyes, and recycled wool. Unfortunately, they do produce some leather, and we have reached out to them to see if they’d be willing to drop it.
