Edun Sale

Get 50% AW2010 styles from Edun – Bono and Ali Hewson’s line that focuses on fair-labor garments, developing sustainable cottage industries, and empowering communities. I specifically recommend the linen military shirt, the linen sweater, and the organic cotton crewneck shirt below. From an environmental standpoint, linen is almost always low-to-no pesticide usage and much less water intensive than cotton. Organic cotton helps steer clear of one of the largest uses of pesticides and herbicides in the world. Steer clear of the leather, though! Leather is one of the worst environmental offenders, not to mention it’s hidden cruelty.

According to Time Magazine, The international community rejected U.S.-led efforts to expand protections for a number of endangered and threatened species at a meeting of the U.N. Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Of the roughly 40 proposals on the agenda, the most contentious dealt with a prized fish. Japan, which imports nearly 80% of bluefin tuna for use in sushi and sashimi, fought hard against a proposed trade ban. Conservationists warned against prioritizing economic interests over the survival of an entire species.

http://smartbeing.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/bluefin-tuna2.jpg

Bluefin tuna: A proposed trade ban was rejected despite the depletion of much of the world’s bluefin stock

Elephant: A ban on trading ivory was reaffirmed, though Tanzania and Zambia pushed for it to be lifted

Shark: Only one of four species hunted for shark-fin soup, the porbeagle, was granted protection

Trad and True. Linen and linen blends say casual confidence. When a fabric like linen (also known as flax) is grown, there is no need for pesticides. In addition, the fibers are incredibly strong and have an amazing ability to handle humidity and heat. The hand-feel is rugged, yet lux, and the crumple-factor adds an air of nonchalance. Food Is Bombs.
The world’s hottest chili is being turned into hand-grenades in India. While not deadly, bhut jolokia, the worlds hottest chili, is intended to render suspects harmless in much the same way tear gas does. But just because it’s a pepper, does not mean it’s not still chemical warfare.

Tigers in Twilight.
Shenyang Zoo Abuse: There are tons of reasons to be against zoos, but in China, where 11 endangered Siberian tigers starved to death (and 3 more are in critical condition), it’s clear that international attention and action needs to shut these zoo-slums down for good. Some people argue that their kids will never get to see a tiger in the wild, and a zoo is a way to get them to see and care about the tigers. But with this line of logic should we also be caging and showcasing everything else your kids might not see like tribal peoples?Life in a cage for animals that roam free is torture, plain and simple.
To Save a Snow Leopard: In Afghanistan, a hunter captured one of the rarest creatures alive: a snow leopard. But the hunter who snared the snow leopard saw only a $50,000 price tag. That was the fee supposedly offered by a wealthy Pakistani businessman to any hunter in the Wakhan who could deliver a snow leopard — alive. But the capture of a snow leopard, once believed to be extinct in Afghanistan, didn’t stay secret for long. The feline was to become the object of a four-day rescue operation that involved NATO forces, the U.S. ambassador in Kabul, a royal prince and even Afghan President Hamid Karzai. But the mission would end like so many others of similarly good intentions in Afghanistan.

Dutiful Denim

G-Star Raw, organic cotton jacket

G-Star Raw continues to be a leader both in design, and in advocacy. They use sustainable fabrics like organic cotton and they are also at the forefront where socially responsible production methods and labor are concerned. Check out G-Star’s End Poverty 2015 Campaign in affiliation with the UN’s Millennium Goals. Here’s how you can get involved.

End poverty by 2015. This is the historic promise 189 world leaders made at the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000 when they signed onto the Millennium Declaration and agreed to meet the “Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs are an eight-point road map with measurable targets and clear deadlines for improving the lives of the world’s poorest people. World leaders have agreed to achieve the MDGs by 2015.

We are looking forward to G-Star’s new collection for AW2010 and hope to report to you from the NYC Runway show next week!

Another leader in the denim world is the European line, Kuyichi. Kuichi continues to use hemp, organic cotton, linen, lenpur, spare fabric, tencel, cotton in conversion, recycled poly, recycled cotton, bamboo, natural dyes, and recycled wool. Unfortunately, they do produce some leather, and we have reached out to them to see if they’d be willing to drop it.

BAMBOOZLED: ‘Spinning’ Eco Threads

Bamboo

I was shocked to discover that Bamboo Rayon is not an eco-friendly fabric! Thanks to Mark Morris of Turk & Taylor, who recently exchanged Emails with me regarding certain processes by which plants like bamboo are turned into soft threads, I was directed to this article which discusses in depth, the toxic chemicals and hazardous conditions surrounding a seemingly benign industry.

Greenwashing

The major distinction here is between a rayon and a linen. Rayons are typically made using large amounts of hazardous chemicals like bleach, carbon disulfide, and sodium hydroxide (AKA: lye, caustic soda), known for a sleuth of environmental and health hazards, in a process called hydrolysis alkalization. Aside from the shock of finding out that something being touted as almost beneficial to the Earth and those of us living on it, I feel betrayed by those reaping the benefits of this perfect example of greenwashing.bambooBamboo yarn

It’s no surprise since the EPA has been a huge failure, and on top of that, even their limited scope cannot touch most of the “Free Trade” protected environmental catastrophes otherwise-known-as textile factories in other countries with little environmental regulations.

There are two typical ways in which bamboo is turned into fabric. One of them is considered sustainable – utilizing enzymes, one of them is not. Of course, the cheaper way is the dangerous one:

Bamboo the plant is wonderfully sustainable; bamboo the fabric isn’t so easy to categorize. There are two ways to process bamboo to make the plant into a fabric: mechanically or chemically. The mechanical way is by crushing the woody parts of the bamboo plant and then use natural enzymes to break the bamboo walls into a mushy mass so that the natural fibers can be mechanically combed out and spun into yarn. This is essentially the same eco-friendly manufacturing process used to produce linen fabric from flax or hemp. Bamboo fabric made from this process is sometimes called bamboo linen. Very little bamboo linen is manufactured for clothing because it is more labor intensive and costly.”

In a market already overwhemled with specialized labeling, how can we know that the things we buy are actually eco-friendly and sustainable, and not just some ridiculous ploy?

Oeko-Tex Standards“If you are thinking of purchasing bamboo clothing or any clothing that has been made outside the U.S., look for certification from an independent and reliable certification company such as Oeko-Tex, Soil Association, SKAL, KRAV or similar organic or sustainable certification body. Currently, the Oeko-Tex label is the most comprehensive label for insuring that the garment is healthy for consumers but it does not certify the manufacturing processes that produced the garment as being environmentally friendly and sustainable.”

SPRING 08 STYLE REPORT: Slim Lounge, Urban Sport & Back to Nature

by DB Style Director, Jodi Taylor

Jodi Taylor DB Special Comment: Jodi Taylor is a fashion designer and stylist living in New York City. She is also my roommate and business partner in our vegan, organic, dinner party catering company “Savory & Seed”. Her comprehensive Spring 2008 Men’s fashion report serves as evidence of her fashion expertise and as a tool to inspire fashion decisions based on current trends.

* NOTE: Many of the runway images used in this report are for inspirational purposes only, as the designers use leather , fur, and wool products.

Springtime is always refreshing. Shedding the heavy winter jacket and lightening up the wardrobe with new spring looks can make you feel like a dapper gent.

This spring, my three favorite looks are Slim Lounge, Urban Sport & Back to Nature. All of these themes are easy to incorporate into your current wardrobe. Choose the one that suits you the best so you feel comfortable and confident…you want to own the style not vice versa. Here is how to keep up with the seasons top trends while staying squeaky-green!

1.SLIM LOUNGE

Givenchy spring 2008Valentino Spring 08

  • For this style, think 70’s lounge meets gangster with a little rock & roll .
  • Wear a 3-piece suit relaxed, and unbutton the first few buttons of your shirt.
  • Don’t be afraid of the ascot or a slim light cotton scarf. If you need a little help tying your tie or scarf click HERE.
  • Try mixing a subtle print and texture as well as vintage pieces to your collection.
  • Go thrifting and look for pieces to add to your wardrobe like a printed polo or a slim fit button up.
  • If you wear a tie, do it skinny, easy to get vintage.

The 70’s lounge look is a little tricky, don’t overdo it otherwise it will end up looking a little too theatrical.

The color palette for this look should be subdued. Chose smooth and charismatic colors that will go from day to night; charcoals and shades of gray, navy, black and khaki. Add a little warmth to your ensemble with a muted lavender or teal.

Stay subtle in color and pattern, but combine it with a two-tone suit or a printed shirt under a plain vest or blazer to make a statement. Classic black & white also works for this look and is a simple solution that’s always in.

Etro Sping 2008
