Georges Laraque holds up a plate of food that includes an Om burger, available at his vegan restaruant, Crudessence, in Montreal.

• Georges Laraque’s days of checking people on the ice are over as of last year, but he’s been busy getting people to check themselves before they wreck themselves with his vegan restaurants in Canada – Crudessence, with four locations in Montreal. Political office may also be in his future as Canada’s Green Party chose him to be their new deputy leader for showcasing such passion and eloquence concerning ethical and environmental issues. A recent article in Canada’s National Post says:Postmedia News Files

On the surface, the causes and activities Mr. Laraque, 34, has embraced seem worlds away from his life as a professional athlete. But the way he sees it, they are in keeping with the defiant approach to life he has taken since he was a child. “If you tell me I’m not going to make it, I’m going to make it,” he said in an interview at his restaurant, Crudessence. It is an approach shaped by his experience of racism at a young age.

• FOX news is like a backwards sewage system: pumping waste and filth into our homes and offices. Most of us would like to vomit when we see and hear this crap. That’s why I am signing the Turn Off FOX petition that says “I won’t play Fox News in my home, and I’m calling on businesses and other public establishments to stop playing Fox. I don’t want Fox spreading hate, lies, and division in my community and want to support businesses that are Fox-free”. Take two minutes to sign this, and get a free sticker that you see on the right!

With the largest egg recall in US history (more than a half billion eggs) and another huge meat recall in the works, now is best time to ditch animal products, if you haven’t already! Replacing eggs in cooking and baking is a cinch, choose any of these options:

  • • 1 tbsp milled flax seed and 3 tbsp water = 1 egg (perfect for cake).

  • • Ener-G Egg Replacer – follow directions on box.
  • • 2 tbsp cornstarch= 1 egg
  • • 2 tbsp arrowroot flour = 1 egg
  • • 2 tbsp potato starch = 1 egg

Polos, Smoothies & Animals Rights in Washington

• A polo is great because it’s somewhere in between a dress-shirt and a tee-shirt. The sophistication of a collar and buttons combined with the comfort and casualness of a short-sleeve tee is perfect for backyard barbecues, outdoor lunch meetings, and Sunday brunches. Thrift stores are chock-full of polos, and here are some ethical polos to ponder in organic cotton, hemp, recycled poly and more:

• The National Journal wrote a thorough and objective article about the state of the Animal Rights movement. According to them, the sophisticated movement is gaining momentum, sharpening it’s tools, and ushering in some huge political and cultural changes – but not without a backlash from animal farmers and animal-industry-funded groups like the Center for Consumer Freedom.

Tail docking cattle is among the most disturbing practices MFA’s undercover investigator captured on film during a recent investigation of New York’s largest dairy operation. A worker uses a bladed clamp to slice off the ends of calves’ tails, severing nerves, skin and vertebrae – all without the use of anesthesia. The calves’ legs buckle from the pain, as they stagger and stumble to the ground. The worker then applies a smoking cautery device to the amputations. Find out how you can help.

Lionhearts & Battle Cries: 20 Lines for 2010

by Joshua Katcher

Tevas with socks. Cargo Pants. Slogan tees. Let’s face it, people who care about ecosystems, animals, and worker’s rights aren’t typically celebrated for their sartorial poise. Likewise, most designers who care about form, function, and aesthetics aren’t typically known for their environmental wisdom or empathy; Fur coats, leather everything, toxic cotton, sweatshops.

There is new breed of designer, though, not so easily written off, who can turn old televisions into jaw-dropping shoes, who foster relationships with organic cotton farmers in developing countries, who invest in research and development of warm, biodegradable, recycled, cruelty-free textiles, whose aesthetic vision is not hampered by the challenges of navigating ethical dilemmas, and who – armed with tencel, lenpur, hemp, recycled fabrics, faux-fur, soda-bottle ultrasuede, and organics – aren’t afraid of challenging the tragic credo set by heritage brands.  In a culture where the iconography of the rebel is tied up in so many embarrassingly common and mainstream social, environmental and ethical muddles, these true iconoclasts are redefining cool, and reinvigorating the lost meaning of dressing like a dissident.

1. Vaute Couture. Leanne Mai-Ly Hilgart is the prefect example of a designer who dreamed big. Her line went from a fantasy (gorgeous, eco, vegan winter coats that can handle Chicago in February) to reality. The line looks as amazing as it is warm and ethical; 100% Cruelty-free, sustainable, and fair-labor. Vaute Couture took over 8 months of fabric research and development and launched just last year, but has already garnered a host of celeb fanatics from Emily Deschanel, to Alicia Silverstone, and Ginnifer Goodwin. The men’s line launches August 2010. vautecouture.com
