Wash Room Updates

When I gave up using mainstream razors (because of animal testing) I was a bit disappointed with the alternatives – but it looks like Preserve has finally unleashed a triple-razor that is just as good as any Gillette or Schick. They are BPA-free, recycled, made in the USA, and not tested on animals! Only $8.49, and the replacement razors are 4 for $8.49.

Overstock.com announced that it will no longer sell products made from exotic skins. According to company officials, the Salt Lake City-based online retailer “has removed from its site all apparel and accessory products which feature exotic animal skins, including snake, alligator, crocodile, lizard, ostrich, stingray, eel, shark or kangaroo and will no longer sell such products.” Thanks to PETA for cluing them in.

The Strong, Sexy, Silent Type (of New Year’s Cleanse)

By featured contributor, Dr. Alejandro Junger

dr-jungerHow does a discerning gentleman such as yourself get ready for the brand spanking newness of 2010?  By getting squeaky clean, starting from the inside out.

No matter how many better-for-you-than-the-alternative-but-still-sweet-vegan goodies you scarfed down this holiday season, there’s hope for squeezing into those animal & eco friendly duds you got for Christmas or Hanukkah and feeling your overall fabulous (yet manly) self.

All of you gentlemen out there want pretty much the same things: to get rid of that spare tire or beer belly, look in the mirror and see clear, chiseled features, hear the women in your lives exclaim over how good you smell, alleviate depression (common with the lack of sunlight this time of year), feel sharper and stronger, have clear thoughts and increased stamina, as well as lower your risks for possible diseases and health problems in the future.

You know that to accomplish all of this, a detox is definitely required, and before you write them off as too expensive or complicated, think again, because a detox is something you can easily do at home with a bit of advice and some motivation.  So here you go: Consider this a house call/kick-start from your very own personal detox specialist!

1. YOUR BODY IS A TEMPLE, SO CLEAN THE HOUSE! Literally, by getting rid of toxins from as many areas as you can.  Consume, bathe, slather, sleep on, wear and generally surround yourself with as many organic and all-natural products as possible.  Yes, it’s incredibly important to eat chemical-free foods (local and seasonal as well) but don’t forget about your cleaning products, or the sheets you spend 1/3 of your time in (maybe more if your new clean habits increase your stamina and suddenly magnetic attractiveness!), or the shaving lotion, cologne and toothpaste you use.  Our skin is our largest organ and if toxins are going on it, you can rest assured they’re doing harm in your body as well.

popeye-and-olive-oyl

2. LOVE THOSE GREENS. There was a reason Olive Oyl was enamored with Popeye.  He loved his green vegetables and had the muscles to prove it.  Dark green vegetables are powerhouses of energy, vitamins, minerals, mood-boosters, immune system strengtheners, weight loss tools, and basic overall miracle workers.  They are tools that no man should be without on the road to optimal health and vitality.  Raw, juiced, steamed, sauteed, blended; however you eat them, just make sure you are!

StrongSexySilent

3. BE THE STRONG, SEXY, SILENT TYPE. It works for rugged cowboys, and it will work in more ways than one for you. When you find time to be quiet as often as you can throughout the day, you are alleviating the stress and anxiety that builds up from normal everyday life.  Stilling the mind works the connection between mind and body and when your mind is calm, quiet, strong and regenerated, your body immediately follows.  Nothing fancy, just a few minutes a day, so instead of zoning out in front of the tv, lie, sit or stand with your eyes half lowered or closed and let your thoughts simply fall away without control or stress or pressure to do anything in that moment except BE.  When you’re called out for being lazy and unmotivated, invite whoever it is to join you and raise the peaceful love vibration of the world, so suddenly you have entirely universal and unselfish results for what started out as sort of a self-serving act!  Oh and don’t forget your beauty sleep either. . . most of us need roughly 8 hours to have the best skin, metabolism, immunity and overall mood possible.  Winter is the perfect time to become a bit more bear-like and hibernate more than usual, it actually harms our health to fight nature as we do, working like crazy even when the sun is telling us to slow down a bit.

4. LOSE/HEAL YOUR GUT. When you work to promote optimal gastrointestinal health, you simultaneously streamline your size as well. . . a healthy gut is usually not a bloated and extended one so take a daily probiotic, eat lots of fermented foods (miso, sauerkraut, spicy kimchi, kombucha), and make sure you’re staying well hydrated with plenty of water.  Also don’t forget to move around.  Walk, run, stretch, lift, swim, climb stairs, play with your kids, play pickup ball games, have sex, cook a meal, hug everyone. . .any kind of movement benefits you in more ways than one, between losing extra weight, acting like happy pills, and making human connections.

So what are you waiting for?  Get busy cleaning up your act this January. . . and get your sexy back.

GILT is an invite only site (click here to join). They do often feature organic brands like Loomstate and Edun, but also occasionally feature designers who continue to use fur, so take a moment to kindly ask them to stop featuring these items from designers like Michael Kors and tell them we want more cruelty-free stuff.

Our pals at Friends of Animals and CARE have a suit of their own. They are suing to stop National Park Service deer control plans. Deer “control” is always a tumultuous topic, and this case really highlights the opposing forces. I always find it amusing that it is the wildlife that is the problem, as opposed to our ever-expanding, ever-”developing” of wild areas:
Photo of white-tailed deer doe in the snow

“The deer are not responsible for the park’s manicured lawns, for deliberate removals of natural vegetation over the years and the planting of non-native foliage, for a lack of respect for the animals comprising the park’s natural food web, for paved areas and buildings, for more than a million visitors per year, vehicle exhaust, or for the constant presence of (often speeding) cars. These factors must be addressed directly to address the pressure on the deer, Friends of Animals and CARE have urged.”  – FOA

What do you think about deer “control” and other ideas we have about “pests”?

RVCA created a vegan studded pleather duffle bag that can carry all the anti-fur pamphlets you’ll hand out this autumn and winter, in style.

Sometimes Autumn weather can throw you for a loop. A short sleeve hoodie is a good compromise. These organic cotton hoodies from San Francisco’s B.Son can do the trick while apple-picking or partying with the turkeys at Thanksliving.

If you’ve gotta just roll up your sleeves and fight the good fight for wild horses, I love the wooden toggle-sleeve on this organic cotton shirt from the Australian line, Mjolk.

Drop-crotch seems to be coming up all over the place. People either love it or hate it, and it’s a pretty loud trend in Europe and Australia. Mjolk offers up these organic cotton jersey trousers. If slouch is not your thing, don’t worry. If you’re a risk-taker, dive in do some dancing in celebration of the 4.5 million animals recently saved from cruel experiments.

Native, Naturally

The incredible craftsmanship, color usage, and pattering of traditional Indian textile is going to be big this fall. The pairing of these styles with plaids, denim, canvas and moccasin-inspired shoes and boots is a great way to include it in your wardrobe. Because these textiles are traditionally made from wool and other animal hairs (like in the Pendelton for Opening Ceremony image up top), it is quite difficult to find animal-friendly and eco-friendly versions.

NavShirtThriftLuckily, thrift stores are chock full of this stuff, from silk-screened shirts to plaid pants and vests, to this western shirts I found, with a great black, silver and tan Chimayo pattern on it. I definitely recommend starting off at the second-hand stores, for both your wallet and the environment.

Vuoris “Native” and “Tribe” organic tee-shirts  honor the men and women whose heroic efforts, so often unnoticed, propel us towards a more sustainable future. The “Eagle” tee from Loomstate and the “Endangered Wolf” tee from Loomstate for Barney’s celebrate two iconic animals that both need respect and protection. I’d wear this over a skull and crossbones, any day.

Savory Summer Roll with Cuke Salad

SavorySummerRollCukeSalad

This meal was easy to prepare and combines a refreshing, crisp salad of cukes, carrots, cilantro and onion with a savory, warm roll stuffed with sauteed onions, kale, rice-burger and roasted cashews. Best of all, it’s gluten-free and soy-free!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED (serves 4):

Salad:

  • 1 large cucumber
  • 2 large carrots
  • 1/2 bunch of cilantro
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 red onion
  • 2 tbs spicy mustard
  • 4 tbs apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1 tbs agave (or preferred sweetener)

Roll:

  • 4 sheets of rice paper
  • 1 bunch of lacinato kale (aka Dinosaur Kale)
  • 1 large spanish onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 rice burger patties
  • 1/4 cup raw cashews
  • 1 tbs vegetable oil, for sauteing
  • 1tbs Italian dressing
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp nutritional yeast

DIRECTIONS:

Salad:

  1. Cut the cucumber in half, longways -  and then slice into half-coins about 1/2-in. thick.
  2. Dice the cilantro, red onion and garlic.
  3. Slice the carrots into think coins.
  4. Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl, and add the vinegar, agave, salt, pepper and mustard.
  5. Mix well and set aside to marinade while you prepare the rolls.

Rolls:

  1. Bring a medium pot of salted water to a boil.
  2. Bring a skillet to medium heat, and add the veg oil.
  3. Cut very ends of the kale off (just 1 inch) and then cut the bunch in half. Place it in the hot water.
  4. Boil the kale only for 1 minute, because we still want it to be slightly crisp. remove the kale from the water but SAVE THE WARM WATER and set both aside.
  5. Chop the Spanish onion into rounds about 1/4-in. thick and add place in the skillet.
  6. Dice the garlic, and burger patties and place in the skillet. Add the cashews, but set a few aside for garnish.
  7. Pour over the Italian dressing, and let everything cook over medium heat until golden brown.
  8. While step 7 is sauteing, dip your rice paper in he warm water. It will quickly become soft and elastic.
  9. On a cutting board or working surface, lay out the rice papers and evenly divide the kale and the sauteed combo onto them.
  10. Roll them up, plate and sprinkle nutritional yeast and the remaining cashews on top. Scoop some Cucumber salad for each plate and serve side-by-side.

Végétalien à Paris

One stop on my European travels was a little city called Paris. Ever heard of it? We found a little health food store that had some amazing vegan cheeses and spreads. Le Sojami is a french company that makes some ridiculously good herb cream cheese and veg pate. PURAL makes one of the best vegan cheddars I’ve tasted. Carlie and I had a picnic under the Eiffel Tower and made warm baguettes with fresh fig and three cheeses! “Get out of town,” you might be saying to yourself… well I did! I went to France and it was great!

Rory Freedman and I ate at a handsome little veg place called Le Potager Du Marais (mostly vegan) and enjoyed a delicious, traditional French meal with a super-rich chocolate mousse dessert. See the menu below for a descripion of what we ate. We were so thrilled to be eating French food, as oposed to just typical vegan food. One of the many things I loved about Europe is that the sidewalk cafes and bars are all set up to face the street, which makes people-watching so much easier.

Another spot we hit up was La Victoire Supreme Du Coeur. This was fine dining at its best, and if you go to Paris, this is a must. It is totally vegetarian with many vegan options.

LaVictorieSupremeDeCroer

In addition to eating out, we also cooked a few meals! I dumpster-dove those gorgeous sunflowers, and we bought produce at little markets in the neighbohood to enjoy with a breakfast of multi-grain banana pancakes that I made from scratch. For dinner, Joelle and Carlie made pan-fried brussels sprout-cakes, roasted chickpeas, and herb-polenta with gravy.

Finally, we went out in search of dancing partners, bars, and booze.
